Gastrointestinal Symptoms of COVID-19

COVID-19 affects different people in different ways. In absence of respiratory manifestations, symptoms caused by the involvement of digestive system such as intestines, liver and pancreas are usually overlooked.

The involvement of gastrointestinal tract, liver and pancreas induced by new coronavirus may be developed concurrently with respiratory-related symptoms or it manifests alone. On the other hand, disturbance of digestive system is responsible for significant complications of  multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C).

Although respiratory tract manifestations are the most commonly reported symptoms in COVID-19, emerging data suggest that the gastrointestinal tract and liver might also be affected by SARS-CoV-2, on the basis that gastrointestinal epithelial cells and liver cells express angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), the major receptor of SARS-CoV-2. Together with respiratory transmission, there is potential for faecal–oral transmission of SARS-CoV-2.

This lecture will be conducted on 18th of August at 8 AM by Fars Pediatric Association (FPA). Our presenter, Dr. Ataollahi who is assistant professor of pediatrics gastroenterology will present this interesting topic. The participants will also actively engage in the discussion by quizzes polls, and the results will be subsequently published.
